In-house crowding on childhood hospital admissions for acute respiratory infection: A matched case-control study in Bangladesh

Globally, acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in under-five children [WHO and UNICEF, 2013; GBD Chronic Respiratory Disease Collaborators, 2020]. Pneumonia alone is responsible for approximately 20% of children deaths globally, a majority of which occur in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia [GBD Chronic Respiratory Disease Collaborators, 2020; WHO and UNICEF, 2013]. Multiple studies show that 40% of children's ARI deaths occur in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Nepal [WHO Regional Office for Africa, 2015; Smith et al., 2000; Fischer et al., 2013].
