Comment on: Transversus abdominis plane block using a short-acting local anesthetic reduces pain and opioid consumption after laparoscopic bariatric surgery: a meta-analysis

Since becoming the most commonly performed bariatric procedure in the United States by 2013 [1] and the most commonly performed bariatric procedure worldwide soon thereafter [2], the vertical sleeve gastrectomy has undergone a fair amount of scrutiny to determine whether it, like other surgical procedures, might sometimes confer unintended long-term consequences. Although there is still some controversy, 1 finding is that there may be an increased rate of de novo gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) after sleeve [3].
