Geographical mapping of road traffic injuries in Lilongwe, Malawi

Annually, 1.35 million people are estimated to die from road traffic injuries (RTI), and 93% of these deaths occur in low and middle income countries [1]. Globally, road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death in young people aged 9-25 years, and more people die from road traffic injuries than from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or diarrheal diseases [2]. The low income countries (LIC), which include countries with a GDP per capita of less than 1006 USD, have 9% of the world ´s population, 1% of the worlds vehicles and 13 % of the worlds road traffic deaths [1].
