Most Orthopaedic Trauma Patients Are Using the Internet, But Do You Know Where They're Going?

Orthopaedic trauma patients can utilize the Internet to learn about their injuries, available treatment options and their surgeons. The Internet is a readily available tool, which has increased in household prevalence from 74% in 2013 up to 89% in 2016 [1] An increasing number of patients are utilizing the internet to research orthopaedic conditions and treatment options, with up to 65% of outpatient orthopaedic patients using the internet as a resource.[2-5] Concerns for a so-called digital divide between orthopaedic trauma patients and the average orthopaedic population due to trauma being associated with lower socioeconomic classes have been disproven [6, 7].
