A Step in the Right Direction for Surgeon-Scientists

Leveraging a unique perspective of medical necessity and ability to optimize innovation through iterative clinical translation, surgeon-scientists have made many significant contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences over the past century. Only a few of these advances in medical science include organ transplantation (Starzl), mechanical circulatory support (Jarvik, Frazier), identification of the association of smoking with lung cancer (Ochsner, DeBakey), and translational application of understandings of the biologic process of angiogenesis in treating cancer (Folkman).
