Bicuspid Aortopathy and Sports Clearance

Bicuspid aortic valve is the most common congenital heart defect, with a population prevalence estimated at 1-2%1. This condition has a variable clinical course – while many have mild disease, longitudinal studies have shown that up to 50% of patients will have some degree of aortic dilatation by age 182,3. Within this setting, sports clearance is a common scenario faced by pediatric cardiologists. Traditionally, a conservative, risk-averse approach has p redominated, given the magnitude of incorrectly clearing those with truly pre-morbid disease.
