Breast imaging can be associated with substantial anxiety due to the impact of abnormal mammography on distress and perceptions of risk for breast cancer. We sought to determine the level of anxiety after notification of abnormal mammography and need for follow up at a cancer institute and whether or not further distress was provoked by the visit to the ‘cancer institute’ for follow up.

Trauma and catastrophes seen by surgeons, medics and first responders puts them at high risk for developing depression, anxiety, PTSD and associated suicide. Both exaggerated/high and blunted/low stress reactivity (HPA) axis has been shown to correlate with poor mental health, along with a pro-inflammatory state. We hypothesis that cortisol reactivity and cytokine levels correlate with mental disorder risk and traumatic life experiences.
