Prevalence of cervicovaginal human papillomavirus infection and genotypes in the pre-vaccine era in China: A nationwide population-based study

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common genital infection, which mainly causes cervical cancer and other anogenital or head and neck cancers, including anal, vaginal, vulvar, penile, and oropharyngeal cancer.1 The epidemiological characteristics of HPV infection vary greatly worldwide; for example, the prevalence and distribution of HPV genotypes with respect to age and geographic locations.2,3 Prophylactic HPV vaccines are recommended to prevent HPV infection and reduce the related burden of diseases, especially for cervical cancer.
