Colonization with Gastrointestinal Pathogens Prior to Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation and Associated Clinical Implications
Diarrhea is a common complication following hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), occurring in 76-91% of transplant recipients [1]. The etiologies of diarrhea in the early post-transplant period include infectious causes, chemotherapy-associated mucosal inflammation, side effects from other medications, and acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) [2]. Approximately 40% of HCT recipients with diarrhea have infectious etiologies and Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is the most common [3, 4].
