Comment on: Relationship between bariatric surgery outcomes and the preoperative gastrointestinal microbiota: a cohort study

Alterations in the human gastrointestinal microbiome are associated with multiple disease states, including severe obesity, diabetes and hypertension [1]. The gut microbiome has become a potential mechanism of action of bariatric surgery on post-surgical energy balance and metabolism. Specifically, sleeve gastrectomy has previously been found to increase gut bacteria Proteobacteria and Verrucomibrobia with reduced Firmicutes. Further, Akkermansia muciniphila, known to be negatively correlated to inflammation, is increased after SG [2].
