The burden of injuries in Mexico: secondary data analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study, 1990 to 2019

Injuries are a major cause of death worldwide and a public health threat that is mostly avertable, yet can cause death or disability at any age [1]. Globally, injuries cause over 4.3 million deaths per year, accounting for 11,780 deaths per day. Road traffic injuries, unintentional injuries and self-harm and interpersonal violence represented more than 40% of total deaths in the 15-29 age group and were among the five leading causes of death in 2019 [2]. Over 90.0% of deaths that result from injuries occur in low and middle income countries.
