Knowledge of ocular complications of diabetes in community-based people with type 2 diabetes: The Fremantle Diabetes Study II

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common diabetes complication and leading cause of vision loss globally [1,2]. Early stage DR is usually asymptomatic with significant vision loss occurring late in the disease process [3], but screening and early intervention reduce the risk of severe visual impairment and blindness by up to 90% [4]. Diabetes is also associated with cataracts, maculopathy and glaucoma [5 –7]. Lack of awareness of the ocular effects of diabetes may prevent people with diabetes from attending ophthalmic screening, while those who have vision loss and are worried about their eyesight are more likely to attend [8].
