Interleukin-1 β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and oxidative stress biomarkers in cows with acute Brucella abortus infection

AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate the possible alterations in some cytokines and oxidative stress biomarkers in cows with acuteBrucella abortus (B. abortus) infection. The study has been carried out on twenty-two cows ’ sera. All serum samples were examined for brucellosis by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (i-ELISA). Cows that were seronegative forB. abortus infection were used as a control group; meanwhile, cows that were diagnosed positive forB. abortus infection were used as an infected group. Cytokine profile and oxidative state markers showed significant increases in interleukin-1 β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (NO) levels inB. abortus-infected cows in comparison with the control group. On the other hand, significant decreases in interleukin-10 (IL-10) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels were reported inB. abortus-infected cows when compared with controls.
