Elucidation of the role of the lamina cribrosa in glaucoma using optical coherence tomography
Glaucoma is a chronic and progressive optic neuropathy characterized by the death of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) associated with increased cupping of the optic nerve head (ONH) and a corresponding loss of visual field (VF).130,131 The disease is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, currently affecting about 70 million people, with approximately 10% with bilateral blindness, and it is estimated that the number of individuals with glaucoma will increase to 111.8 million by 2040.
