Micro-controlled thermal stimulator for detecting fine fiber changes in patients with diabetes mellitus: a diagnostic accuracy study

According to the World Health Organization and the International Diabetes Federation [1], diabetes mellitus (DM) is considered a chronic non-communicable disease that occurs when there is insufficient insulin production or resistance to the action of this hormone. The increase in the morbidity and mortality rates of DM is related to the development of chronic complications, which can be classified as micro- or macro-vascular complications. Micro-vascular complications of DM include retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy; whereas, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases are characterized as chronic macro-vascular complications of DM [2].
