Universities Report 5.7 % Growth in R & D Spending in FY 2019, Reaching $ 84 Billion

Total R&D expenditures at U.S. academic institutions reached $ 83.7 billion in FY 2019, an increase of almost $ 4.5 billion ( 5.7 % ) from FY 2018, according to the Higher Education Research and Development Survey by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation. Federally funded R&D at universities increased 6.3 % to $ 44.5 billion in FY 2019, the largest percentage increase since FYs 2010 – 11. The share of higher education R&D supported by the federal government remained about 53 % .
