Prevalence and association of continuous polypharmacy and frailty among older women: A longitudinal analysis over 15 years

Medications are important in maintaining quality of life for many older people. As people age, they tend to develop multiple comorbidities and often require several medications. The concomitant use of many medications- polypharmacy, is a common geriatric syndrome [1]. Although there does not seem to be any consensus regarding its definition, polypharmacy is commonly referred to as the use of five or more medications [2], with 10 or more medications sometimes referred to as hyperpolypharmacy [2].
