Factors Affecting Confidence and Competence of Doctors in performing Operative Vaginal Births: a Qualitative study

Operative vaginal birth (OVB) is an important skill for obstetricians. It is the most common emergency intervention in obstetrics [1], can reduce the risks associated with second stage caesarean section [2] and result in higher rate of spontaneous vaginal delivery in subsequent pregnancies [3]. OVB requires a high degree of skill [4]. It is recommended that the person performing an operative vaginal birth should demonstrate “adequate knowledge experience and skill to use the instruments and manage the complications should they arise” [5]· Training time before independent performance has markedly reduced in the recent years [6].
