High-sensitivity C-reactive protein in HIV care: Tuberculosis diagnosis and short-term mortality in a cohort of Kenyan HIV patients in the DREAM programme
Tuberculosis (TB) is a communicable disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is one of the major causes of ill health and among the top 10 causes of death worldwide, as well as the leading cause of death by a single agent. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that about 10 million people fell ill with TB in 2019, and approximately a quarter of the world population is infected with M. tuberculosis (World Health Organization, 2020). This is particularly evident in the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, where the combination of TB and HIV has led to high mortality.
