The history of our field, indeed, the history of childhood and child development, can be told in 2 ways: through people or through fields of study. Thus, Binet and later Gesell showed that development, cognitive and overall, could be assessed systematically. Sigmund and Anna Freud recognized the role of the unconscious and of instinctual development. Benedict and Mead and later Erikson showed how culture shapes childhood. Kanner described children whose differences had always been known to parents, but never recognized by professionals.
