Gender differences in hospitalized adult patients with cellulitis. A prospective, multicenter study

Cellulitis, a common type of skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI), is a frequent cause of hospital admission of adult patients representing 1-14% of emergency room visits and 4-7% of hospital admissions among selected populations, especially among the elderly and those with obesity, diabetes and other comorbidities (Ellis Simonsen et al, 2006; McNamara et al, 2007). In a large American study that used data of patients aged 0-64 years from the HealthCore Integrated Research Database for the period 2005-2010, the SSTI incidence was 48 episodes per 1000 person years, a high rate that was twice that of the urinary tract infections and tenfold that of pneumonia (Miller et al, 2015).
