Automated testing may make peripheral artery disease screening more attractive

It is not infrequent that a functional test is used to define a disease. For example, measuring the blood pressure (BP) of the brachial artery serves as the sole diagnostic criterion for arterial hypertension. Similarly, the ankle-brachial index (ABI) has been used to define the presence or absence of peripheral artery disease (PAD). The BP test is so widely used that primary care providers take BP measurements at every visit whether the patient is symptomatic or not. Furthermore, home automatic BP  monitors are available to the general public at a reasonable cost.
