Cross specialty collaboration to improve outcomes of carotid endarterectomy
We read Boitano et al's paper1 regarding differences in outcomes between patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) by vascular and nonvascular trained surgeons in our recent resident journal club, and it generated lively discussion. CEA is one of the most commonly performed operations by vascular surgeons and is a close second to peripheral vascular interventions as the most frequently recorded operation in the Vascular Quality Initiative, which is purposely agnostic to provider specialty.
