Commentary: Small nonfunctional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NF-PNETS): Resect or enucleate ? The case for an individualized approach

Beane et al.1 present the case for broader application of enucleation for small NF-PNETS. Compared to resection, they found that patients having tumor enucleation had shorter operative times, fewer transfusions and postoperative complications including fewer surgical site infections and organ space infections, with an incidence of clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula (CR-POPF) that was statistically equivalent to resection, and a shortened postoperative length of stay. Despite the limitations of the study, the results support an expanded application of enucleation to more patients with small NF-PNETS.
