The global epidemic of type 2 diabetes and the excess mortality associated with the disease have been the focus of strong research interest over the last decade. People with hyperglycemia have a higher risk of diabetes development [1], cardiovascular events [2], microvascular complications, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality [3, 4]. Therefore, the identification of subjects with a higher risk of mortality among people with prediabetes and diabetes is vital in reducing the burden induced by type 2 diabetes, worldwide [5].
