Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic on Pediatric Infectious Disease Research

Since March 2020, all continents have been burdened with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, which has led to a considerable health crisis.1 The magnitude of the challenges posed by the pandemic exceeded the expectations of the scientific community and public authorities, who rapidly developed strategies to properly manage the disease.2-4 However, the measures adopted to address the pandemic differed among European countries, including the type of lockdown, border closings, school closures, the use of facial masks, accessories protection, the use of SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and point-of-care for rapid-antigen detection diagnostic tests.
