Polyunsaturated fatty acids as predictors of future suicide attempt

Every year, almost 800,000 people die by suicide, and 10 to 20 times more individuals attempt suicide, indicating that both suicide and non-fatal suicidal behaviors are prevalent problems that need to be addressed [1]. More than two-thirds of suicide decedents die on the first attempt [2], suggesting a need for early detection and prevention of suicide attempts. The study of suicidal behaviors is highly relevant to the reduction of suicide mortality since a history of suicide attempt confers a 42-fold increased risk for suicide [3].
