Fetal Echocardiography Indications and Lack of Association between Abnormal Exams and Advanced Maternal Age: A Cross-Sectional Study - Fetal Abnormal Echocardiography

Abstract Objective To analyze the most frequent referrals for fetal echocardiography, including advanced maternal age and its association with abnormal results. Methods We included all pregnant women referred to perform fetal echocardiography (gestational age 22-32 weeks) in 2 health centers in Rio de Janeiro, from June 2015 to June 2016. Advanced maternal age was considered when age was> 35 years at the time of delivery). Referral reasons and results were recorded, according to the Brazilian Fetal Cardiology Statement. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios were calculated (Poisson regression). We considered p 35 anos. As indica ções e os resultados dos exames foram registrados, segundo a Diretriz Brasileira de Cardiologia Fetal. Foramcalculadas as razões de prevalência brutas e ajustadas através da regressão de Poisson, considerando-se p

New UCLA-led research indicates that simple text messages emphasizing the easy availability of COVID-19 vaccines successfully boosted the number of people who got the shot. The researchers, from theDavid Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, theUCLA Anderson School of Management and Carnegie Mellon University, say their findings held true across all demographics, including groups that have been hesitant to receive the vaccine.“We found that text messages that stressed the accessibility of the vaccine and that included ‘ownership’ language — such as ‘The vaccine has just been made available for you...

This study aims to assess the influence of hepatic steatosis on iron deficiency and replacement therapy after bariatric surgery.MethodsSeventy-nine individuals undergoing gastric bypass have been studied at 4 time points (preoperative and 1, 3, and 6  months after surgery). Weight, body mass index (BMI), iron, ferritin, vitamin B12, folate, hemoglobin, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and use of iron replacement were recorded.ResultsForty-two individuals (53%) had moderate/severe steatosis assessed by ultrasound. No differences were seen in iron profil...

This study aimed to evaluate its ecology and to identify this Legionella species as a respiratory pathogen. A PCR assay for detecting the L. feeleii mip gene was developed to identify it in clinical and environmental samples. Culture and PCR were performed in environmental samples from four drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). Free L. feeleii was only detected in raw water samples (3.4%), while L. feeleii as an Acanthamoeba endosymbiont was found in 30.7% of raw water, 11.5% of decanter biofilm, and 32% of finished water samples. Therefore, Acanthamoeba spp. plays an essential role in the multiplication, persistence, a...

When performed by a trained sonographer, fetal echocardiography can be instrumental in identifying cardiac pathology and abnormal cardiac physiology before a baby is born. Even though the diagnostic accuracy of a fetal echocardiogram can be limited by maternal body habitus, gestational age, and fetal position, sequential exams allow for detailed analysis of the cardiac structures. Early identification and diagnosis of intrauterine cardiac anomalies and subsequent pregnancy management and delivery planning are essential to providing the best possible outcome for fetuses born with heart defects. In this case study, we descri...
