Incidence of antiepileptic drug therapy and factors associated with their prescribing in outpatients with diabetic polyneuropathy

The prevalence of diabetes in adults is around 9.3% worldwide, and this number is projected to increase to 10.2% by 2030 and 10.9% by 2045, underscoring the large and growing burden associated with this chronic condition [1]. One of the most frequent complications of diabetes is diabetic polyneuropathy, and it is estimated that up to 51% of people with diabetes are affected by peripheral neuropathy [2]. Diabetic polyneuropathy has a negative impact on physical functioning [3], mental health (e.g., depression [4] and anxiety disorders [5]), and quality of life [6] and is associated with major health-related costs [7] and decreased productivity [8].
