Medical Students’ Perspectives on Empathy: A Systematic Review and Metasynthesis

Conclusions Medical students are beset by theoretical confusion regarding the concept of empathy, and they express doubts about its utility and relevance. Instruction should focus on simpler concepts such as listening, and schools should leverage clinical supervisors’ strong influence on students’ empathy. Prioritizing certain types of knowledge (clinical facts) during medical education has a globally negative effect on medical students’ empathy.
