Every journey begins with the first step: Reflections on the first catheter ablation in humans

Today, we take for granted the incredible role that catheter ablation plays in the therapy of patients with cardiac arrhythmias —it was not always this way. In the 1970s, patients with potentially life-threatening supraventricular arrhythmias were treated by open heart surgery with direct ligation or cryoablation of the atrioventricular (AV) junction. Patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome underwent open-chest surgic al ablation of the bypass tract.
