Making a living doing what we love : Chinese medicine and business

I teach the business curriculum at NCNM to all the Chinese medicine students. I’m currently preparing to revise my previous curriculum in preparation for the next class this summer. At the same time, I am fielding a *lot* of personal questions from people in all phases of their careers about how to do various things in business. I’m getting something like a dozen questions a day via Twitter, Facebook, email and face-to-face interactions. That’s quite an increase in interest! All these questions, as well as those that naturally come up as I seek to take my own businesses to the next level, have me thinking. Chinese medicine has been a licensed profession in the United States for nearly 50 years, right? Before that, obviously, it was practiced elsewhere for a lot longer than that. During that time, people have made their living practicing this medicine – some living fairly “high on the hog,” and others hovering near or below the poverty line – both by choice and by default. If you do a quick Google search for courses that help acupuncturists to start, maintain and even sell businesses, you’ll find plenty. We have books on the subject, plenty of touring lecturers, and nearly every school for Chinese medicine features at least a couple of practice management courses.
