My thoughts: Unspoken truths about gender inequality in surgery across different cultures and income levels

Over the last decade, the medical profession witnessed a surge of female representation with an increasing number of female medical graduates. However, the increased attrition of the female workforce throughout their surgical career compared to male surgeons remains evident despite their comparable achievements.1 Armed with enthusiasm and qualification, many women are still hesitant to embark on the progression in this fast-paced and highly demanding career. This can be attributed to a complex interplay of biological differences and cultural stereotypes, which has ultimately resulted in a compromise in quality mentorship and has shaped a hostile environment for other women who wish to enter the surgical field.
