Health care service use and costs for a cohort of high-needs elderly diabetic patients
Globally, the number of people with diabetes mellitus has quadrupled in the past three decades and diabetes mellitus is the ninth major cause of death [1]. The WHO estimates that over 422 million adults now have diabetes, with a growth in the disease ’s global prevalence from 4.7% in 1980 to 8.5% in 2014 [2], which especially involves people aged>65 years [3]. A previous study also found that almost the totality (97.5%) of diabetes patients had at least one comorbid condition and almost 9 in 10 had at least two [4].
