Standardization in Performing and Interpreting Electrocardiograms

The 12 lead ECG is one of the most performed study to diagnose various cardiovascular conditions. It is estimated that more than 52 million ECGs were analyzed by computer in the United States in 1987. (1) A conservative estimate of the increase of computerized ECGs in the United States from 1987 until 2013 would indicate that 60 million computerized ECGs are taken presently in the United States. The cost of an ECG is $16.46 based on Medicare reimbursement of which $8.30 is for the facility fee and $8.16 for the professional fee for interpretation.
