The dynamics of heparin binding protein in cardiothoracic surgery - a pilot study

Cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) induces an acute phase inflammatory reaction including complement activation and secretion of  proinflammatory cytokines (1) . An excessive production and release of cytokines can provoke tissue injury which can result in organ dysfunction (2). Surgical trauma and contact with the non-physiological surfaces of the extracorporeal circuit, endotoxemia, ischemia and reperfusion injury are all stimuli for inflammatory response (3).
