Update in the epidemiology, risk factors, screening, and treatment of diabetic retinopathy

AbstractDiabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus and is the leading cause of visual loss in the elderly. Hyperglycemia and altered metabolic pathways, leading to oxidative stress and development of neurodegeneration in the initial stage of diabetic retinopathy1. Vascular endothelial damage, development of microaneurysms and dot intraretinal hemorrhage were early hallmarks of non ‐proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR).
