Step up your advocacy role

The American Nurses Association Code of Ethics and Interpretive Statements includes nursing's promise to our public that we will advocate for quality care for all patients and communities (ANA, 2015). The Institute of Medicine Future of Nursing insisted that nurses must lead in health care advocacy (IOM, 2011, p.221 –222). We, as Pediatric Endocrinology Nursing Society (PENS) members, have a role and responsibility to advocate for legislation that supports our patients and families living with diabetes as “health policy determines who gets what type of health care, when, how, from whom, and at what cost” (O'Grady et al., 2016, p.4).
