Adipose tissue, composed of adipocytes, pre-adipocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and macrophages, is recognized as a major player in metabolic regulation [1]. Adipose tissue can cause glucose and lipid metabolism disorders by several mechanisms, such as adipose tissue hypoxia and inhibition of adiponectin expression [2,3]. Visceral fat, also known as intra-abdominal fat, is located inside the peritoneal cavity, packed in between internal organs and the torso, as opposed to subcutaneous fat, which is found underneath the skin, and intramuscular fat, which is found interspersed in skeletal muscle [4].
