In vitro dissolution behaviour and absorption in humans of a novel mixed L-lysine salt formulation of EPA and DHA

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are available in oily formulations containing either their triacylglycerols, ethyl-esters, phospholipids or free fatty acids. Recently, a L-lysine salt formulation of (carboxylic) EPA and DHA became available (Lys-FFA), offering favourable stability and technical properties. Lys-FFA showed complete dissolution in vitro under simulated gastric (12hr) and intestinal (3hr) conditions, supporting the hypothesis that it will release free fatty acids in the upper GI tract.
