Is an Increase in Heart Rate the Result or Cause of Cardiac Dysfunction?

Nwabuo and colleagues demonstrated the association between temporal changes in resting heart rate in young adults and the risk of heart failure and cardiovascular diseases in middle age.1 For young adults, who have not developed dyslipidemia or diabetes mellitus, the changes in resting heart rate are relatively easy to track and can be useful to predict the future risk of cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, this study also suggested the correlation of the changes in resting heart rate and the suboptimal early life risk factors and lifestyle habits (ie, smoking, alcohol use, and low physical activity).
