Non-contact specular microscopy with Topcon instruments to assess central corneal thickness of healthy human eyes – A 20 year review

In the 1960 ’s it became progressively recognized that objective measures using optical pachymetry were useful in the assessment of post-operative corneal edema, with it being considered that these had high ‘sensitivity (accuracy of 0.01 mm)’ [1]. The pachymetry measures could be made by viewing the cor nea in specular reflection mode with the slitlamp, with an attachment available to facilitate setting of the correct angle for illumination and observation to make central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements.
