The theme of this issue was originally called “soft skills.” The phrase “soft skills” has been classically used in health care to describe the skills required to work with patients. But the term “soft skills” never felt right. Working with human beings isn't “soft”; it is, in fact, really hard. Many times, the technical skills r equired of health professionals are more straightforward compared to the rich complexity of skills required to effectively work with people. This people-work in health care can be humbling, challenging, and ultimately, extremely rewarding.
