Training and Competency in Cardiovascular Computed Tomography: Collaborative Paradigm for the Rising Tide

The advent of 64-detector row cardiovascular computed tomography (CCT) in 2005 ushered in a new era in cardiovascular medicine. At the time, the ability of CCT to non-invasively perform coronary angiography represented the potential “holy grail” test as compared to an array of functional tests designed to infer coronary artery disease severity based on electrocardiographic or imaging surrogates. At the time of its introduction, which occurred during the peak of drug-eluting stent enthusiasm, the focus of coronary CT angiogr aphy (CCTA) in this pre-COURAGE (Clinical Outcomes Utilizing Revascularization and Aggressive Drug Evaluation) trial era was to simply replicate simple binary thresholds of invasive angiography stenosis severity while seeking broader clinical validation(1,2).
