Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a specific form of chronic, progressive, fibrosing interstitial pneumonia of unknown cause, leading to respiratory failure and ultimately to death. IPF mostly occurs in older individuals (>50 years old) and the incidence of IPF in Europe and North America is 3-9 cases per 100,000 person-years [1].
