Maternal risk from thromboembolism needs to be reduced

The publication of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) et  al1 represents an excellent opportunity to review the outcomes of competing clinical strategies for venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis and to consider the next steps for research that may inform clinical care. In the United States, recommendations from the American College of Obstetricians a nd Gynecologists (which SMFM Consult Series #51 largely aligns with) support perioperative mechanical prophylaxis for cesarean delivery and heparin prophylaxis for high-risk women with thrombophilia or previous VTE events.
