Effect of fasting status and other pre-analytical variables on quantitation of long-chain fatty acids in red blood cells

As a source of energy, constituents of membranes and precursors to numerous bioactive molecules, long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) play essential roles in health maintenance and outcomes [1]. Insufficient intake or the inability to absorb LCFAs from the diet can cause a number of health problems, such as dermatitis, liver and immune system dysfunction, or impaired growth in children. Factors contributing to development of fatty acid deficiencies include genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis and inborn errors of metabolism, receiving parenteral nutrition, or severe malabsorption [2,3,4,5].
