Pattern of use of palliative radiotherapy fractionation for bone metastases and 30-day mortality
Radiation therapy (RT) can provide successful palliation of painful bone metastases in up to 80% of patients, with approximately 35% of patients achieving complete pain relief [1]. Single-fraction RT (SFRT) is recommended due to its equivalence to multi-fraction (MFRT) in the palliation of uncomplicated bone metastases [2 –9]. However, multiple studies evaluating RT fractionation patterns for palliation of bone metastases have reported wide variations in practice and low uptake of SFRT [10–18].
