Introduction

This issue of Surgery, like this past year, is different from all that came before it. The year 2020 has seen an unmitigated public health disaster for our country and for much of the planet. None of us have been entirely immune from the many effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of us have had unspeakable personal loss and tragedy, most of us continue to experience professional challenges and uncertainty, and all of us continue to feel the disruption of the social bonds in our lives and in our profession.
