Surgical Stress Induces Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Reduction and Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction Via Glucocorticoid Receptor Phosphorylation in Aged Mice.

CONCLUSION: These results presented a mechanism that surgical stress-induced GR phosphorylation contributes to POCD in aged individuals. Inhibition of GR activation and phosphorylation might be a potential treatment target of POCD. PMID: 25611431 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract Adhesions formation is considered a significant clinical entity implicating the healing process following major abdominal surgery, with serious clinical consequences and need for substantial health care expenditures. Several agents and substances applied either locally or systematically could potentially function as inhibitors of the formation of peritoneal adhesions endowed by limiting tissue apposition during the critical stages of mesothelial repair. Phospholipids are identified as surfactant-like substances, acting as a temporary membrane-like coverage of serosal defects. The experimental use of phosp...

Authors: Koichiro K, Haruki T, Tomonari I, Kei N, Masanobu I, Taizo F Abstract Solitary abdominal paraaortic lymph node recurrence after radical lung cancer surgery is very rare. Here, we report a case of a solitary abdominal paraaortic lymph node recurrence of lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A 63-year-old man was diagnosed with lung SCC (cT1cN0M0 stage IA3), underwent a video-assisted right lower lobectomy (ND2a-1), and the pathological findings showed SCC (pT1cN0M0 stage IA3). The EGFR mutation and ALK translocation statuses of SCC were negative, and adjuvant therapy was not performed. Follow-up positron emis...

Conclusion: Our data indicated that Omi/ HtrA2 regulates a mitochondria-dependent apoptotic pathway in a murine model of septic encephalopathy. Inhibition of Omi/HtrA2 by UCF-101 leads to neuroprotection by inhibiting the cytosolic translocation of Omi/HtrA2 and antagonizing the caspase-dependent apoptosis pathway. Therapeutic interventions that inhibit Omi/HtrA2 translocation or protease activity may provide a novel method to treat SAE.Cell Physiol Biochem 2018;49:2163 –2173

Authors: Lee SY, Lim S, Cho DH Abstract A 16-year-old female with Ewing sarcoma, a very rare disease with poor prognosis in women, was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain. Diagnostic laparotomy revealed the Ewing sarcoma originating from the extramural uterus. Histological examination yielded positive test results for CD99, vimentin, S-100, eosin 5-maleimide and periodic acid-Shiff. EWS-FLI1 type 1 translocation was confirmed. Fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) 4 (c.1162G> A) and HRas proto-oncogene (HRAS; c.182A> G) mutations were also detected. At eight months following complete remission, pe...

CONCLUSION: According to our study, the cleaning of intraabdominal infections with dry gauze is more effective than the cleaning with physiological saline for the elimination of aerobic bacteria. There is no difference observed with respect to the anaerobic bacterial counts. PMID: 30028499 [PubMed - in process]

Tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) in non–sexually active female adolescents is a rare presentation to the pediatric emergency department. In the following case, bilateral TOA secondary to Streptococcus constellatus was diagnosed in a 13-year-old virginal female. The patient was seen 4 months before presentation for interventional radiology-guided drainage and antibiotic treatment for an intra-abdominal abscess due to suspected appendiceal rupture. Exploratory laparotomy on the most recent presentation demonstrated an appendix with inflammation and serositis on pathology report, a concern for chronic appendicitis with microp...

CONCLUSION: It was found that CDP is safe for BP and could be a potential protective factor to mitigate BP effectively, indicating that the performance of laparoscopy operation under CDP is feasible to control SIRS; at the same time, CDP would not raise the incidence rate of BT.
